What could be worse than being a child who is forced into a brothel? Perhaps being freed from the brothel but then treated as a criminal by the police, by your village, and even by your family. A group in the Netherlands decided to take action by creating and funding a school that prepares such children for college where they will study the law. It is not just in India. According to the United Nations, about 2.5 million people are enslaved in sex trafficking worldwide in an estimated $US32 billion industry. It is understandable that criminals exploit helpless people. What is not understandable is that the cultures in most countries assume that the victims are to blame and the traffickers go unpunished. The assumption seems to be that these young girls and boys are not worth protecting and the people who enslave them are just legitimate businesspeople.
